For most of their career, Anathema have made music that defies any naive pigeonholing. Formed in the mid-1990s, they have become one of Britain's most respected rock bands. With such credits in their pocket, Anathema now return with an album that will undoubtedly be regarded as their most accomplished to date. Produced and mixed by Christer-André Cederberg at his Cederberg Studios in Oslo, Anathema's tenth studio album is titled "Distant Satellites" and is as artfully crafted as any other album in their illustrious canon. What's more, it's another bold step into new territory that more than underlines the band's status as leading songwriters and musicians. "Luckily for us, the tunes don't dry up," says Daniel Cavanagh. "We're not very conscious writers. We're people who let the music fill us up and always try to get out of its way a little bit. Because it's as much about getting out of the way as it is about controlling the music." A brilliant collection of beautiful songs, vividly, artfully and passionately performed, "distant satellites" once again highlights the talents of the Cavanagh brothers along with drummer John Douglas. "Distant Satellites" is the eagerly awaited follow-up to 2012's acclaimed Weather Systems and last year's stunning Universal concert film directed by Lasse Holie. Although they've once again collaborated with Christer-André Cederberg, not to mention Steven Wilson, who mixed two of the songs, and Dave Stewart (Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson), who is responsible for the extraordinary orchestral arrangements on the new album, the basic vibe of "Distant Satellites" is much more restrained, as Danny Cavanagh explains. "The album is deliberately cleaner. We felt it was right to limit the different elements and only keep them where really necessary," he says. "A bit like Radiohead with 'Kid A', in other words. 'OK Computer' was very dense and multi-layered, and then they came back with a bare-bones, vocal-based album that was anything but loaded." The album is accompanied by a gorgeous ethereal cover by Korean new media artist Sang Jun Yoo, based on his "Distant Light Installation" in New York. Already one of the most critically acclaimed albums of the year, "distant satellites" is the work of a band whose shared love of music grows stronger with each passing year. mixed by Grammy-nominated Steven Wilson.
