A new recording of all Vivaldi's cello concertos Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) wrote an almost unimaginable number of almost 500 concertos, most of them for violin, but also 27 pieces for cello. At the time, the cello was still a relatively modern instrument, whose cantilena he appreciated and knew how to use. Vivaldi broke with the monodic tradition of chordal accompaniment for the soloist and placed much more emphasis on melodic elaboration and ornamentation. He wrote virtuosic passages with lively arpeggios and fast sixteenth notes and a remarkably wide rhythmic variety. Italy's original instrumental ensemble L'Arte dell'Arco, under the direction of Federico Guglielmo, a proven Vivaldi expert of world renown, recorded all of Vivaldi's cello concertos for this 4-CD box set. The young cellist Francesco Galligioni shines as soloist. Until now, the recordings have only been available as part of the "Vivaldi Edition". Now, for the first time, they are being released separately. The recordings were made from January to May 2014 at the Marian Abbey of Carceri in Italy; the booklet includes Francesco Galligioni's notes on the concerts, the instruments used and biographies of the artists.
