Was there love involved? Vivaldi composed some 30 violin concertos and at least two concertos for viola d'amore for her, and in 1712 he spent 20 ducats to buy a violin for the 16-year-old soloist. An anonymous poem from 1730 describes her art as follows: 'She plays the violin in such a way that whoever hears her will get to paradise, if the angels there play in the same way': Anna Maria (1696-1782), first a pupil and then a lifelong teacher at the Ospedale della Pieta in Venice, and thus essentially Vivaldi's colleague, was considered the best violin virtuoso in Italy. Other composers, including Tartini, also composed for her. In the collection of Pieta music now housed at the Marcello Conservatory in Venice, the most important volume is the one that bears the name Anna Maria on its cover, the so-called little book of Anna Maria's music. It is the repertoire of a great soloist, rarely difficult and full of extravagant surprises. A selection of six concertos is presented by L'Arte dell'Arco with Federico Guglielmo. It was perhaps an anonymous poem by Vivaldi: "But I won't say more, or you might think I'm in love with it, and that might not even be far from the truth."
