Das Tracklisting umfasst Songs, die von KünstlerInnen wie Billie Holiday (das Titelstück, "Don't Explain"), Aretha Franklin ("Ain't No Way"), Bill Withers ("For My Friend"), Ray Charles ("Sinner's Prayer"), Delaney & Bonnie ("Well, Well", ein Gesangsduett mit Joe Bonamassa), Tom Waits ("Chocolate Jesus"), Etta James ("I'd Rather Go Blind" und "Something's Got A Hold On Me") - einer von Beth Harts persönlichen Lieblingssongs.
Product Information Known for her raw and powerful blues-rock sound, Los Angeles singer-songwriter Beth Hart envelops classic soul covers with her expressive vocals on Don't Explain, an album born out of her friendship with guitarist Joe Bonamassa. Produced by Kevin Shirley (Joe Bonamassa, Led Zeppelin, Black Crowes), the album features Hart's searing interpretations of ten songs, with Bonamassa accompanying himself and his band on guitar.
"Beth has a pretty heady voice, very reminiscent of Janis Joplin, says Shirley, who has produced Bonamassa's last five albums. "She also has a lot of Etta James in her, but she hasn't gotten to her yet. There's a subtlety in the way she delivers the most heartfelt melodies in this material that she hasn't shown before. It's very great, she's done a fantastic job." Bonamassa and Hart have crossed paths many times on the road, playing many of the same festivals in Europe. An early 2010 concert in London caught her eye. "It was killer," Bonamassa says, suggesting they do a project together sometime. Don't Explain was born the summer Bonamassa recorded his latest album, Dust Bowl, in Santorini, Greece. "One day I was up late, I couldn't sleep. I was playing the songs from the re-release of Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out on my iPod, and all the opening acts from that Stones show were there," he recalls. "As soon as the Ike & Tina Turner songs came on, I said out loud, 'Beth Hart'. I texted Kevin about doing a record of soul covers with Beth, and he said, "Actually, that's a great idea." Beth%26Joe2Hart agreed, though she says, "When Joe first called me and said he wanted to do a soul record with me, I thought I'd be a backing singer. He said, 'No, you're going to sing the lead'." She collaborated with Bonamassa and Shirley on the song selection, and the final track list includes numbers made famous by artists such as Billie Holiday (the title track, "Don't Explain"), Aretha Franklin ("Ain't No Way"), and Bill Withers ("For My Friend"), Ray Charles ("Sinner's Prayer"), Delaney & Bonnie ("Well, Well," a vocal duet with Bonamassa), Tom Waits ("Chocolate Jesus"), Etta James ("I'd Rather Go Blind" and "Something's Got A Hold On Me") - a personal favorite of Hart's - and more.
To accommodate the time pressures of all involved, Don't Explain was recorded in four days over two weekends in January 2011 at Village Recorders in Los Angeles (and later mixed by Shirley at The Cave in Malibu). Hart prepared by listening to the originals over and over to fully learn and absorb the material - and was delighted with the quick capture of raw energy and immediacy she felt in the studio. "With the level of players that were there, including Joe of course, I really got to hang out," she says. "I couldn't do my best, I had to do better. That kind of training camp humbled me and it was great. We had an awful lot of fun making the record." In support of Hart, Bonamassa assembled the band featured on his #1 blues album, The Ballad of John Henry (2009): Anton Fig (drums, percussion), Blondie Chaplin (guitar) and Carmine Rojas (bass) and Arlan Scheirbaum (keyboards). The sound has evolved into a simmering blend of soul, jazz, rock and blues, with Hart's vocals confidently holding the pocket of every groove. "Beth was an absolute hidden gem," says Bonamassa. "She has a beautiful voice. She's a fantastic singer and a lovely person." Don't Explain explains it all. (Stereo, November 2011)
