Although Billy Joel became commercially successful with albums like 52nd Street and The Strangers, he was accused of being a soft rocker for radio stations. Idol refused to accept this criticism and responded with the album Glass Houses, released in 1980. Although Joel probably never sounded that rock again, this musical blend was exactly in keeping with the tastes of the New Wave era and the radio stations of the time. The album won a Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal and is a notable example of blending purely produced pop arrangements with different varieties of rock music. The song "It is still Rock'n'Roll to me" became Billy Joel's first hit in the US and the entire album stayed at number one on the US charts for six weeks.
