V roce 1997 Blur opustili anglický charakterní zpěv a dali přednost americkému levicovému rocku. Britpop, který se částečně nahrával na Islandu, se vyhnul abstraktnímu experimentalismu a drtivým kytarám, které drží pohromadě instinktivní talent Damona Albarna pro psaní chytlavých melodií. Album obsahuje druhý britský singl skupiny "Beetlebum" a pohodovou hymnu "Song 2", která nakonec pomohla Blur dosáhnout transatlantického úspěchu.
