It was the band's first and only album for Atco Records. The album reached number 191 on the Billboard 200 chart. The album was re-released on CD by Rhino Records in 1990. In 2009, the album was remastered and re-released on CD by Rock Candy Records. The album was generally well received by music critics. Bruce Eder of AllMusic rated the album four stars out of five, stating, " Cactus is a very good album and is one of the better hard rock albums of the 1970s". Paul Elliott of "Kerrang!" rated the album four stars out of five and said, "It's a hard rock classic, full of crunchy riffs and powerful drums." Lester Bangs of "Circus" magazine rated the album four stars out of five and said, " Cactus is one of the heaviest and strongest rock bands on the scene today."
