On the excellent album "Café Atlantico", Césaria Évora moves musically more into Latin American than Portuguese areas, unlike his previous albums. Évora draws on traditional Cuban and Brazilian music that completely captivates one. The album is also a tribute to her hometown of Mindelo on the Cape Verdean island of Sao Vicente, once a bustling port full of sailors who sailed between South America, the Caribbean and Portugal. That's why this music is both heartbreaking and nostalgic, full of warmth and tragedy. The masterful "Carnaval de São Vicente" is one of the happiest and most bittersweet party songs ever captured on record (and was even released as a maxi-single with fantastic remixes). "Roma Criola" is tragic, lonely, helpless, never boring, and proves to be a masterful undiscovered ballad; her interpretation of the Spanish-sung standard "Maria Elena" will break your heart. The album's shifting moods have an elegance rarely found in modern music, from the haunting opening track "Flôr Di Nha Esperança" to the summery "Amor Di Mundo"; and the picture she paints in this café at the end of the world unfolds before us is a beautiful, colorful and moving palette.
