As the legendary John Peel once said of The Fall, "Always different, always the same", the same can be said of Darkthrone. Things change, times change, people change, and yet the Norwegian black metal legends defiantly and forever remain Darkthrone, even if they sound fresh and new, delivering just five songs in 45 minutes on their nineteenth album Eternal Hails. Since forming in 1986 in Kolboton, Norway as Black Death, Darkthrone have been masters of their craft. After abandoning death metal on their 1991 debut Soulside Journey and embracing a more primitive black metal sound on the following year's A Blaze In The Northern Sky, they helped define black metal in the '90s with albums like 1993's Under A Funeral Moon and its follow-up Transilvanian Hunger. Darkthrone remain unique even within their own canon. Eternal Hails' longer, doomier tracks reflect drummer Fenriz's love of doom, taking his time to express himself. What Fenriz and his Nocturno Culto bandmates have come up with goes back even further than the explorations of black metal, to the sounds of the 70s and the looser sound of bands that dealt with larger themes. This not only made the songs longer, but made them a different animal from the ground up. "Growing up on metal as a kid, I always sought out bands with long songs. Black Sabbath had a lot of that, and there was a long song on Celtic Frost's Dawn Of Meggido album, so I put it on in a record store and discovered another dimension of metal. Candlemass' 'Epicus Doomicus Metallicus' had only long songs on it, so I bought it without listening to it, and it was one of my best buys ever - an eternal inspiration for my whole career." "It became a bit logical for us, it's hard to explain, but you can get used to a different way of listening," says Nocturno Culto. "We're not thinking about a three-minute song at the moment. That's the way we like it. For now."
