Forty-five years ago, the Eagles released their second album, and while it didn't top the charts, as the "Eagles" title that gave the band its name would suggest, it became a cornerstone of the country rock movement. DESPERADO, produced by Glyn Johns at London's famed Island Studios, was born out of Glenn Frey's desire to make a concept album inspired by a book about the gunslingers of the Wild West that Jackson Browne had given him one night. What was originally planned as a collection of songs about anti-heroes fell somewhat apart after writing "Doolin-Dalton" and "James Dean", so they decided to make a Western-themed album. The result was classics like "Tequila Sunrise" and the album's title track, as well as a top-notch - and thematically appropriate - cover version of David Blues' "Outlaw Man," but to say that the final product didn't meet with immediate approval from the Eagles' label would be an understatement. "A guy named Jerry Greenberg was president of Atlantic Records at the time, the distributor of the label we were signed to (Asylum)," Don Henley recalls to Rolling Stone. "When he heard the album, he supposedly put his head in his hands and shouted, 'Man, they made a fucking cowboy album!' The company expected more 'hits' like 'Take It Easy,' 'Witchy Woman' and 'Peaceful Easy Feeling. The DESPERADO album wasn't really a commercial or critical success, but it served its purpose by establishing us as a band that was willing to take risks and not play it safe and do what was expected of them. On its first release, DESPERADO was - as Henley noted - no big hit: it reached #41 on the Billboard 200 chart, and even "Tequila Sunrise" and "Outlaw Man", two singles from the album, didn't make the Top 40, but only #64 and #59 respectively. Still, the album eventually found its fans, and at the time of this writing is well past double platinum, so it's safe to say the Eagles had the last laugh.
