Yasuke, a six-part Netflix anime series from Japanese animator, producer and director LeSean Thomas (Cannon Busters, Children of Ether, The Boondocks), tells the story of an African-born samurai warrior in a fantastical version of feudal Japan in an alternate universe filled with magic, swords and, of course, swordplay. It was a dream project for Flying Lotus, who was involved in the story as a consultant and worked with renowned anime creator Studio MAPPA as executive producer. The Grammy-winning artist's skills are on full display on the album, which mixes synth melodies, bass lines and machine-generated drum patterns while exploring new sonic territories - traditional Japanese percussion instruments like taiko and hyoshigi, as well as West African percussion, a tribute to the Afro-Japanese, feudal yet futuristic world in which Yasuke lives. Flying Lotus recently won the Grammy Award for Best Progressive R&B Album (It Is What It Is) with Thundercat, and was also nominated for Producer of the Year at the 63rd Grammy Awards.
