In November 2015, The Foo Fighters released their eighth studio album Sonic Highways. The album was recorded in eight different cities across the United States, each with their own unique musical scene and sound. The album was produced by Butch Vig and Dave Grohl and features guest appearances by artists such as Joe Walsh, Gary Clark Jr. and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Sonic Highways was well received by critics and fans alike and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album.

At the same time, they made a travel documentary for HBO pay-TV, which premiered in the U.S. in October 2014. On "Sonic Highways", the Foo Fighters take new paths in the truest sense of the word. After the huge success of their previous album, they could theoretically afford anything. To a certain extent, they did. The Foo Fighters recorded every track of the new album "Sonic Highways" in a different American city. They used the most famous studios of all, such as Inner Ear Studios in Arlington, The Magic Shop Recording Studio in New York and Rancho de la Luna in California. Blues, country, folk, punk - the musical styles that inspired the Foo Fighters in "Sonic Highways" are as diverse as the places they are located. It sounds like a "colorful mix," but surprisingly, it's not. In fact, "Sonic Highways" remains an album that sounds orthodoxly like the Foo Fighters. "Sonic Highways" contains lyrical allusions to places and people. There are strong songs like "Congregation," recorded in Nashville, the home of gospel: the song sounds like "church" in all its bombast, but like a church where the Foo Fighters are a religion. That is, gospel and the musicians Dave Grohl interviewed in Nashville to create the lyrics play a minor role. The image of a journey through American musical history therefore has boundaries that Grohl sets. In realizing their musical concept, the Foo Fighters let themselves be carried away by the landscape and history and made something of their own out of what they experienced. Fans will be happy with that. Opener "Something From Nothing" is a classic opener with a great build up from introverted silence to a hoarse roar at the end. "Subterranean" feels very thoughtful overall. "The Feast And The Famine" is musically spectacular with a stop-start riff that sounds musically "hard" as befits and belongs to rebel rock. And the epic "I Am A River" makes it clear with every note that it could form the album's finale. Musical journey or not: the Foo Fighters have arrived where their fans like them best - on the tangible, if relatively short, Foo Fighters album.
