Gang Starr are often mentioned in the same breath as New York's Native Tongues around A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul and the Jungle Brothers, whose intellectual, politically conscious lyrics and more experimental sound were a pleasant break from the parallel dominance of American gangsta rap. Their most recent effort to date, "The Ownerz", was released in 2003. DJ Premiere went on to collaborate with R&B/hip-hop's finest (Jay-Z, Drake, Janet Jackson, Kanye West, Mos Def, DJ Khaled and others) and win three Grammy Awards, while Guru continued his influential Jazzmatazz project. In 2010, Guru passed away and Gang Starr went on hiatus for a long time. Now DJ Premier has stepped out of the shadows and released a new album, Gang Starr, whose lead single and video, "Family & Loyalty," sounds like a tribute to the late Guru, while the second single, "Bad Dreams," still features his voice. Featuring guest appearances from Q-Tip, Royce Da 5'9", Talib Kweli, Ne-Yo, J. Cole, Jeru The Damaja, M.O.P and Big Shug, "One Of The Best Yet" celebrates the legacy of this legendary formation and brings its influence into the present day.
