What once saw the light of day as the first punk rock concept album has now become the first punk rock musical: American Idiot Story opened at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre on September 15, 2009. Originally scheduled for single dates only, it was extended by three weeks during its first season, and in the meantime an adaptation is in the works for a Broadway run. American Idiot will open at the St. James Theatre on April 20 (opening March 20), and is likely to be one of the most impressive and emotional plays Broadway has ever seen. The musical repertoire for the show comes primarily from two sensational albums, American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown, which are considered GREEN DAY's artistic and commercial highlights to date. Both albums reached number one on the German charts, each received a Grammy Award and are among the best-selling and most critically acclaimed rock albums of the past decade. The book for the musical was written by Billie Joe Armstrong and award-winning Broadway playwright Michael Mayer, the music (as it happens) was written by Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool, the musical direction and orchestration was provided by Tom Kitt, and the executive producers were Ira Pittelman and Tom Hulce.
