The album is a collection of "greatest hits" and features songs from throughout the band's career. It was preceded by the release of the single "Need You Tonight / Mediate", which was a new version of the band's 1987 single. INXS : The Very Best has received mixed reviews from music critics. On Metacritic, which assigns a standard rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 58, which means "mixed or average". Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic gave the album three stars out of five, stating that "it's a good introduction to the band that hits all the main points without getting bogged down in details". The album debuted at number two on the Australian ARIA Albums Chart and was awarded platinum by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA). It also reached number two on the New Zealand Albums Chart and was awarded a platinum record by the Recording Industry Association of New Zealand (RIANZ).
