When Janis Joplin died in October 1970 at the age of just 27, unwittingly becoming the poster child for the beatnik motto "Live fast, love hard, die young", her coronation as the Queen of Rock Music could only have been a matter of time. Far more significant than her posthumous induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, however, is the tribute that was paid during her lifetime to her explosive vocal style that "turned the entire history of singing on its head" (Vogue).Janis Joplin's discographical reality is as short and fluid as her life. After releasing two LPs with the rock band Big Brother And The Holding Company, whose outstanding musical support earned her her first contract with Columbia in 1968, the company provided her with a lineup augmented by organ and horns. The goal was to expand the expression of her voice to include blues and funk elements, which diehard fans considered a betrayal of the ideals of rock music. The old-school rock community was more lukewarm about this, especially since Joplin was on a two-month tour of Europe with the Kozmic Blues Band. And for Woodstock fans who still have the band's thick brass sound and bluesy-sounding vocals in their ears, this album is a must as well.
