Stand Up is JT's second album and marks the first album project on which Ian Anderson had full control of the music and lyrics. The album also features the first appearance of guitarist Martin Barre, who has since appeared on every JT album. Tull's original musical approach was torn between the bluesy vision of Mick Abrahams and the more unique approach of Ian Anderson. When Abrahams left the group, his successor Martin Barre became a key player in Tull's evolution towards a more progressive style. Recording of this album began in April 69 and a month later the band had their first UK hit with "Living In The Past", which reached number three in the charts (on a remastered version). Beginning with "Stand Up", the use of dynamics, Celtic folk and classically oriented sound structures, along with Ian Anderson's flute playing and songwriting, became characteristic of Jethro Tull. Simply put, "Stand Up" was at the birth of Tull's sound, and it's no wonder it's one of Anderson's favorite records. In retrospect, "Stand Up" seems like an obvious career turning point, but at the time of its release, Tull was really taking a lot of risks. The move away from a blues approach didn't sit well with Tull's key radio and promotional contacts. The blues-tinged "A New Day Yesterday" is almost a holdover from "This Was," while "Nothing is Easy," often heard in concert sets, is a blues-jazz fusion. "Bouree", a "cocktail jazz" arrangement of the classic J.S. Bach (Ian's words), has become a Tull classic and an almost obligatory part of any concert set. Many Tull fans assume that the Far Eastern influence on the band's music begins with Anderson's solo album "Divinities." Traces can be found in the songs "Fat Man" (sometimes seen as a joke on guitarist Mick Abrahams) and "Jeffrey Goes to Leicester Square", one of three Tull songs dedicated to Ian's childhood friend Jeffrey Hammond, who later joined the band. Although this is hardly a "concept" album, lyrically much of the album is devoted to Anderson's relationship with his parents (a theme continued on "Benefit") and coming to terms with his newfound pop fame. Review: "Pre-prog eccentricity: one of the best Tull albums." (stereoplay, December 2010)
