Everything has already been said about Johann Sebastian Bach's Brandenburg Concertos - and yet the Stuttgart Baroque Orchestra Il Gusto Barocco, with its music director and harpsichord master Jörg Halubek, has dared to make another recording. Indeed, the six concertos, which differ fundamentally in their instrumentation and character, have fascinated enthusiasts and scholars time and again. And despite the numerous recordings of this pinnacle of Baroque concert art, new, interesting and very different approaches are always emerging. The Baroque ensemble Il Gusto Barocco aims to convey the current state of research in its historically informed music-making. "For me, the spirit of historical performance practice means that you are always dealing with sources from the period itself," describes Jörg Halubek. The ensemble is not so much a tightly formed sound body as a think tank with a desire to explore, which also embarks on new journeys as part of this project. This leads to unusual results, such as the use of violino piccolo, a smaller than usual violin, in the first Brandenburg Concerto. The recording was made thanks to a close collaboration with the Bachwoche Ansbach Orchestra, where the ensemble has been invited as a festival orchestra in 2019. Il Gusto Barocco, founded in 2008 by conductor, harpsichordist and organist Jörg Halubek in Stuttgart, consists of leading international virtuosos of the young generation. Depending on the repertoire, the early music ensemble can be attended in chamber or large orchestra. The members are united by the musical tradition of the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. In 2020, the early music specialists have launched a new series Stuttgart Baroque. Recent successful recordings were Claudio Monteverdi's "Marienvesper" (SWR 2 / cpo) 2020, Johann David Heinichen's "Flavio" (first recording SWR 2 / cpo) 2019 and Giuseppe Antonio Brescianello's "Tisbe" (SWR 2 / cpo) 2015.

Johann Sebastian Bach's Brandenburg Concertos are among the most popular works of Baroque music. On the occasion of its 300th anniversary in 2021, Collegium 1704 performed all six Brandenburg Concertos on period instruments in the restored Mirror Hall at Köthen Castle. Founded in 2005 by Václav Luks, the orchestra is one of the most renowned ensembles specialising in Baroque music today. Due to the great stylistic and structural diversity of these concerts, they were the ideal choice to record these musical gems in the historical place of their creation.
