Bach: Concerto BWV 1043 for Two Violins and Orchestra + Vivaldi: Concerto RV 522 for Two Violins and Orchestra (Concerto grosso Op.3 No.8) These recordings of Vivaldi's Concerto grosso in A minor Op.3 No.8 and Bach's Concerto for Two Violins in D minor BWV 1043 were made in April 1957 in the Leipzig Congress Hall by Deutsche Grammophon. Since their joint debut in 1947, Bach's Double Concerto was a central work in the joint repertoire of David and Igor Oistrach, which they both performed in numerous concerts until 1974, when David Oistrach died. Dieter-Gerhardt Worm, then director of the Eterna, recalls, "David Oistrach was a very kind and gentle man. You can hear that in his recordings. His playing is so incredibly perfect, and yet it has such a human touch. He was overcome with a desire to be at least as good as Menuhin, whose Bach style he respected very much. During the recording of Bach's violin sonatas at the Lukaskirche in Dresden, David Oistrakh kept disappearing from the studio to listen to excerpts from Menuhin's recording with a small tape recorder. He had a much better technique, and the recordings with Oistrakh developed rapidly. With him, only a few corrections had to be made, so we could usually record larger takes or whole sections." The 1957/58 recordings have been remastered in their original mono. BONUS: The recording of César Franck's Sonata for Violin and Piano in A major with Igor Oistrakh and Anton Ginsburg is released on CD for the first time.
