From bop and hard bop to free jazz, John Coltrane gave this important musical journey not only a tone but also a spiritual dimension that makes the North Carolina saxophonist, who has died at the age of 40, one of the most influential musicians ever, across all genre boundaries. It's no coincidence that "My Favourite Things" is the centerpiece of this five-volume package from the great Atlantic era. Recorded in just three days in the fall of 1960, the album not only introduced Coltrane's new quartet around pianist McCoy Tyner after his stint with Miles Davis, but also featured complex, previously unheard-of harmony playing - not to mention that Coltrane also opened up new possibilities for the somewhat neglected soprano saxophone. For example, he transformed the jaunty title track (by Rodgers and Hammerstein) with a modal approach into a "hypnotic, Eastern dance of the dervishes" (according to documentarian Ed Wheeler), but Coltrane's famous changes also took advantage of Gershwin classics like "Summertime" and "But Not For Me." On "Giant Steps," he'd already said goodbye to bebop and for the first time played exclusively his own compositions, including later standards like "Naima" and the title track. The autumn recordings "Coltrane Plays The Blues" and "Coltrane's Sound" were later made into two more albums.
