Dlouhá kariéra skutečného Muže v černém přinesla ohromující výsledky. Napadlo by vás například, že Johnny Cash má na svém kontě tolik singlů v americkém popovém žebříčku (48) jako Stones a Beach Boys? Nebo že dvě z jedenácti cen Grammy získal jako autor průvodních poznámek (k albu "At Folsom Prison" a Dylanově "Nashville Skyline")? Nebo tento rekord: muž z Arkansasu měl 38 (!) let po sobě alespoň dva singly v country hitparádě. Johnny Cash má však nejen historické zásluhy, které jsou bezkonkurenční - stále přidává cenné kapitoly do této historie. Symbolizují to i ceny Grammy, které tato dnes již sedmdesátiletá ikona od svého comebacku v roce 1994 získala v řadě za sebou. Za American Recordings jako "Nejlepší folkové album"; za Unchained jako "Nejlepší country album" (legendární byla tehdy reklama "Billboardu", v níž Cash s nataženým prostředníčkem děkoval "nashvillskému hudebnímu establishmentu" za jeho "podporu"...) a v roce 2000 za své poslední album Solitary Man - v kategorii "Nejlepší mužský country vokální výkon". Rok předtím obdržel také prestižní cenu Grammy za "celoživotní dílo". Další kapitola následuje na začátku listopadu.

Na albu "American IV: The Man Comes Around" Johnny Cash pokračuje v úspěšné spolupráci s producentem Rickem Rubinem. Na nahrávání se podíleli hudebníci jako Red Hot Chili Pepper John Frusciante, kytarista Becka Smokey Hormel, klávesová legenda Billy Preston, bubeník Joey Waronker (R.E.M.), Benmont Tench a Mike Campbell z tábora Toma Pettyho a také bluegrassoví/country trsátka Randy Scruggs a Marty Stuart. K nim se přidali i slavní pěvecké hosté: Nick Cave si společně s Cashem zazpíval "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" Hanka Williamse, Fiona Apple se zhostila poct Paula Simona "Bridge Over Troubled Water" a písničkář Don Henley si nenechal ujít příležitost znovu (spolu)interpretovat klasiku Eagles "Desperado". Atraktivní předlohy Cashovi poskytli také Trent Reznor ("Hurt"), Martin Gore z Depeche Mode ("Personal Jesus"), Sting ("I Hung My Head") a duo Lennon & McCartney ("In My Life"). Cash si však čtyři písně napsal také sám, včetně reprízy své klasiky "Give My Love to Rose" a titulní gospelové skladby, o níž jeho starý (a nový) spoluhráč Marty Stuart řekl něco jako tuto krásnou větu: "Je to ta nejpodivnější, nejúžasnější, nejúžasnější a nejzáhadnější křesťanská věc, kterou mohli společně vytvořit jen Bůh a Johnny Cash." A jak víme, přes ty dva se nikdo nedostane.

This album is a great example of Johnny Cash's later work, a mixture of cover versions and originals, and shows off Cash's voice and guitar playing very well. The album has a dark, moody atmosphere and is a great listen from start to finish.

The long career of the real Man in Black has produced amazing results. Would you think, for example, that Johnny Cash has as many singles (48) in the US pop charts as the Stones and the Beach Boys? Or that he won two of his eleven Grammys as a liner notes writer (for "At Folsom Prison" and Dylan's "Nashville Skyline"). Or this record: for 38 (!) consecutive years, a man from Arkansas has been represented on the country charts by at least two singles. But Johnny Cash not only has historical credits that are unparalleled - he continues to add valuable chapters to that history. This is symbolized by the Grammys that the now 70-year-old icon has won in consecutive years since his comeback in 1994. For American Recordings as "Best Folk Album", for Unchained as "Best Country Album" (legendary at the time was the Billboard ad in which Cash thanked the "Nashville music establishment" with an outstretched middle finger for their "support"...) and in 2000 for his latest album, Solitary Man - in the "Best Male Country Vocal Performance" category. The year before, he also won the prestigious Grammy Award for Lifetime Achievement. The next chapter will follow in early November. On "American IV: The Man Comes Around," Johnny Cash continues his successful collaboration with producer Rick Rubin. Musicians included Red Hot Chili Pepper John Frusciante, Becka guitarist Smokey Hormel, keyboard legend Billy Preston, drummer Joey Waronker (R.E.M.), Benmont Tench and Mike Campbell from the Tom Petty camp, as well as bluegrass and country players Randy Scruggs and Marty Stuart. They were joined by celebrity vocal guests: Nick Cave sang Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" with Cash, Fiona Apple sang Paul Simon's "Bridge Over Troubled Water," and singer-songwriter Don Henley didn't miss the opportunity to re(co-)interpret the Eagles' classic "Desperado." Trent Reznor ("Hurt"), Martin Gore of Depeche Mode ("Personal Jesus"), Sting ("I Hung My Head") and the duo of Lennon & McCartney ("In My Life") also provided Cash with attractive role models. But Cash also wrote four songs himself, including a reprise of his classic "Give My Love to Rose" and the title gospel song, about which his old (and new) bandmate Marty Stuart said something like this beautiful line, "It's the weirdest, most amazing, most mysterious Christian thing that only God and Johnny Cash could have created together." And as we know, no one can get past those two.
