Johnny Cash He was a country legend in his own lifetime, although, or perhaps because, he was distinctly different from many of the country singing boys in plaid shirts. He chose to wear black for his performances as a symbol of solidarity with the downtrodden and disadvantaged. The outlaw image he chose for himself was as compelling as the locomotive sound of his rhythm section, which gave many of his 500 written songs a clear recognition value.At the height of his career, Cash, who had only a few petty crimes to his name, was attracted to the tough guys behind prison walls, for whom he sang and played without pay. After initially rejecting his proposal to market these recordings, the record company finally agreed to release the album "At Folsom Prison". Buoyed by the success of the prison record, Columbia released "At San Quentin" a short time later. The recording, on which Cash and his combo garnered spontaneous applause almost verse by verse, exceeded all expectations and is still considered by Cash's friends to be the best live performance of "The Man in Black".

His songs are about his own difficult childhood, the poor, the outcast and the downtrodden, but also about hope and trust. Among the multiple Grammy winner's most successful songs are unforgettable evergreens like "I Walk The Line," "Ring Of Fire" and "Folsom Prison Blues," which he performed in concert at San Quentin's infamous San Francisco prison in 1969 - including the legendary number "A Boy Named Sue," accompanied by jeers from inmates.
