The ten new songs on this eagerly awaited album are surely the highlight of this influential singer, songwriter and writer's work. Although "Old Ideas" only began recording in January 2011, Cohen has been working on the songs and lyrics for several years. Two of the tracks, "The Darkness" and "Lullaby," were recorded in 2007 and early versions were performed as part of the recently completed sold-out world tour. The 77-year-old Canadian had already hinted at what fans could expect from the new album at this year's Prince of Asturias awards in Oviedo in October. Here, Leonard Cohen received Spain's highest literary award. "As I grew up, I understood that with this voice comes instructions. And those instructions are... Never just whine. But if one needs to express the great, inevitable defeat that awaits us all one day, one should always do so within the strict rules of dignity and beauty."
