The album was produced by Mike Shinoda and Rick Rubin. Recording took place at NRG Recording Studios in North Hollywood, California from 2002 to 2003. Meteora is a concept album based on the idea of meteors falling from the sky and hitting the ground. The album's title was derived from the Greek word "meteor", meaning "high in the sky". The album Meteora debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 and sold over 847,000 copies in its first week. With 3.3 million copies sold, it became the second best-selling album of 2003 in the United States. In August 2009, the album was certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and sold 10 million copies worldwide. The album spawned four singles, "Somewhere I Belong", "Breaking the Habit", "Numb" and "In the End". "Somewhere I Belong" was the album's first single and was released on February 25, 2003.
