V roce 1961 vydala společnost Motown první desku Marvina Gaye "(I'm Afraid) The Masquerade Is Over", která byla určena k (rozhlasové) propagaci zpěvákova debutového alba. O týden později následoval oficiálně vydaný singl "Let Your Conscience Be Your Guide". První skutečný hit Gaye zaznamenal v roce 1962 s písní "Stubborn Kind Of Fellow", kterou sám složil a v níž žertoval o své údajné tvrdohlavosti.
Tím položil základ obrovské sérii hitparádových úspěchů: "Pride And Joy", "Can I Get A Witness", "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" a "Ain't That Peculiar" jsou klasiky Motownu z let 1963 až 1965, které se i po tolika letech pravidelně hrají dodnes. Duety, které natočil s Kim Weston ("It Takes Two") a především s Tammi Terrell, byly jistě přinejmenším stejně dobré. Svůj největší hit zaznamenal v roce 1968 s písní "I Heard It Through The Grapevine". "What's Goin' On" ze stejnojmenného alba se stala v USA hitem číslo 1 a album je považováno za mistrovské dílo a obecně je považováno za jedno z nejdůležitějších alb v historii popu.
Umělecky i komerčně velmi úspěšná skladba "Let's Get It On" z roku 1973 byla především hudební ódou na novou múzu skupiny Mavin Janis Hunter. Úspěch "Sexual Healing" mu v roce 1982 dodal další impuls. Najednou byl Gaye, který už byl na cestě do zapomnění, opět oslavovanou hvězdou a této situace si Gaye jistě velmi užíval.
Dne 1. dubna 1984 ztratil popový svět jednoho z nejvýznamnějších soulových zpěváků, kteří kdy chodili po zemi. Gaye po sobě zanechal řadu fantastických hitů a také celou řadu dalších skladeb, které si zaslouží označení mistrovské dílo a které jsou všechny shromážděny na tomto albu.
