The title track instantly became a classic among his best uptempo songs of the 1960s. The album became hugely popular in the UK Northern Soul and British Mod scene during the same period. Some of the songs were covered by the so-called "British R&B" and "beat groups", "The Rolling Stones" and "The Who". Although not released as a single, the song "Wherever I Lay My Hat (That's My Home)" became very popular and 20 years later, in 1983, became a number one hit for Paul Young, stylistically differentiated by the use of Pino Palladino's fretless bass. After two more hits, "Hitch Hike" and "Pride And Joy," Marvin Gaye became an integral part of Motown's growing hit-making elite.
Album valt binnen het genre Funk/Soul, Ritme & Blues en Soul.
