The album was recorded in June 1990 at Rumbo Recorders studios in Canoga Park, California and was produced by Dave Mustaine and Mike Clink. Rust in Peace is the band's only album to feature guitarist Marty Friedman and drummer Nick Menza. The album's lyrical themes deal with war, nuclear war, politics and religion. The album Rust in Peace was a critical and commercial success, peaking at number 23 on the Billboard 200 and selling over two million copies in the United States. The album is cited as one of the most influential thrash metal albums of all time. It was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in 1998. Rust in Peace has been reissued and remastered several times since its original release and was included in the band's 2015 box set The Complete Album Collection.
