With this album, Oldfield followed up his brilliant debut album "Tubular Bells", which has long since made music history since its release on May 25, 1973. Listening to the new album it was immediately clear where the parallels with the first album "Tubular Bells" were and where the differences were. The structure of the music is partly identical. "Master of Ceremonies", "Monster Roar", "Western Saloon" at the end, you will find it all again. The songs more or less match the "spirit" of the original in tempo and timbre, but the melodies are completely new. "Tubular Bells II" thus on the one hand feels very familiar, but on the other hand it is again quite alien. The fear that Mike Oldfleld has brought only his own plagiarism is impressively refuted. Despite the borrowings, we are dealing with a stand-alone work that at least matches the original musically and far surpasses it technically. The alternating moods are fascinating and the melodies linger in the ears. The unrivalled, Oldfield-typical synthesis of folk, rock and pop, the crazy combination of electric guitar, bagpipes and British humour make the album a recommendation for fans. You can sense that Oldfield put a lot of thought into how to adapt the song to the times (to avoid the word "modern", as adapting to the zeitgeist was never Oldfield's concern), how to play with themes while still making it feel like "Tubular Bells". And he more than succeeded. It's often said of movies that remakes or sequels rarely come close to the original, but that's not the case with Tubular Bells II: While the original was in some ways an immature child prototype, the second version is a young adult.

The album was a commercial success, reaching number one in the UK and selling over two million copies worldwide. Musically, Tubular Bells II is a blend of rock, classical and world music, with Oldfield playing a variety of instruments including guitar, bass, keyboards and drums. The album's most famous track is "The Bell", which was used as the theme song for the BBC's coverage of the 1992 Summer Olympics. Despite its success, Tubular Bells II was not well received by critics, who accused Oldfield of cashing in on the success of his first album. Over time, however, the album became a classic in its own right and is now considered one of Oldfield's finest works.
