As described by principal participant Gerry Mulligan in one of the essays in the CD booklet, the birth of the Miles Davis Nonet took place in the basement apartment of Gil Evans, who at the time was well respected among musicians (though little known to the public) as Claude Thornhill's chief arranger. Mulligan, then a little-known baritone saxophonist, John Lewis, a budding composer and pianist who had worked with Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Lester Young, composer Johnny Carisi, Lee Konitz, Thornhill's star soloist, and a rare new alto saxophonist who was not content to merely imitate Parker, all contributed significantly; and Davis, who took it upon himself to assemble a medium-sized group to test his friends' new ideas, and the result was a band that played one three-week gig at the Royal Roost in New York in September 1948. The experiment might have ended had Capitol Records producer Walter Rivers not decided to record Nonet in three sessions over a 14-month period. A dozen classical titles came out of these sessions. Mulligan arranged six of them, including his "Jeru," "Venus De Milo" and "Rocker"; Lewis contributed three more, including versions of Denzil Best's "Move" and Davis and Powell's "Budo"; Evans added brilliant versions of "Boplicity" (composed by Evans and Davis, though credited to "Cleo Henry") and the ballad "Moon Dreams"; and Carisi added his sinuous blues "Israel." Thanks to the steady, controlled improvisations of principal soloists Davis, Mulligan and Konitz, and with substantial contributions from an ensemble that on one or more recording dates also included jazz greats Lewis, Kenny Clarke, Al Haig, J. J. Johnson, Max Roach, and Kai Winding, the Miles Davis Nonet presented an approach markedly different from the fast and overtly virtuosic bebop norm that launched the later "cool" approach that became identified with such West Coast stars as Mulligan, Shorty Rogers, and Chet Baker.

Although the music of the Miles Davis Nonet is highly regarded today, many listeners of the late 1940s were mostly unfamiliar with it. Yet the group was highly regarded by other musicians and was an inspiration to many other bands, as well as to various other groups of the many musicians involved. Traces of the Nonet's music can be found in Miles Davis' groups of the early 1950s, in Gil Evans' recordings (including the great arranger's collaboration with Miles), in Mulligan's piano-less quartet with Chet Baker, in Stan Kenton's various orchestral arrangements, and in the later Modern Jazz Quartet of John Lewis (another Nonet member). In a 1978 interview with Les Tomkins, Gil Evans again praised the Nonet's instrumentation, which was very innovative in the jazz context of the time.
