In 1991, the world's most famous trumpeter was able to look back on five decades of musical development - his own and that of the world. Miles Davis found a way to fuse jazz with classical ideas, and later with R&B, rock and funk, creating hybrids that influenced the evolution of popular music and became its legend. In 1985 he left the Columbia label after thirty years and signed with Warner Bros. Records, which enjoyed great interest from best-selling artists such as Madonna, Van Halen and Prince, with whom he shared a mutual admiration and friendship. Miles Davis' lifelong love of France is well documented and in July 1991 he was made a Knight of the French Legion of Honour. Davis received the award from the French Minister of Culture, Jack Lang, who described him as the "Picasso of Jazz". A few days earlier, he had played this electrifying set with Miles Davis' band at the Vienne Jazz Festival. He died two months later, in September 1991. Miles Davis' performance at the Jazz a Vienne festival on July 1, 1991, was one of his last live performances before his death on September 28, 1991. Although excerpts from the concert have been released over the years, the album "Merci, Miles" is the first time the complete performance has been released in its original order (on CD and digitally) and the first time the entire performance is also available on LP. The package includes liner notes by music historian, journalist and producer Ashley Kahn, artwork by Bruno Tilley, photos and memorabilia from the performance, and a fold-out poster. "Merci Miles! Live At Vienne" will be released on 2CD and 2LP.

Album valt binnen het genre Jazz, Fusion en Avant-garde Jazz.
