"Monument" is the third album by the Minsk band Molchat Doma and the first release by the internationally acclaimed Belarusian post-punk trio on their new label Sacred Bones. The band played a sold-out tour in Germany in March - before Pandemic Lock-Down - and the album features the single "Ne Smeshno", which was a complete hit with the band and live audience. Translated, Ne Smeshno roughly translates to Not Funny. This is not only an apt description of the current tense political situation in the country... Frontman and vocalist Egor Shkutko, accompanied by a drum machine, gives vent to his feelings of disconnection, hopelessness and frustration in Russian. "Monument" is the apt title of the third album by Molchat Doma, a band formed in 2017 in Minsk, Belarus. The title is a symbol of everything the musicians have achieved as a group in a short period of time. They are only three years away from a cryptic insider tip to a viral meme on TikTok. Since then, this post-punk/synthpop/new wave band has been one of the key bands of the Belarusian post-punk scene. Monument" was written and recorded in their hometown of Minsk during their quarantine. Molchat Doma have noticeably perfected their craft on their third LPm album. The songs are stronger and the arrangements more elaborate. Roman Komogortsev and Pavel Kozlov's arsenal has been expanded with a wide range of synthesizers and drum machines, which the musicians operate with precision. Yegor Shkutka's vocals move seamlessly between his typical deadpan tone and an expressive, lulling calm. His beautiful lyrics in Russian are somber and romantic at the same time. With "Monument," Molchat Doma accomplished one of the hardest things a band has ever done. They have greatly expanded their musical scope while retaining everything that made them great from the start.
