Product Information This man is well known as one of the pioneers of electronic music in the late 1960s, and some may have heard of his involvement in several pop hits from the days when he wrote and conducted orchestral arrangements for this or that really popular artist. In the second half of the 1960s, Mort Garson and his assistants Paul Beaver and Jacques Wilson, among others, discovered the newly invented synthesizer thanks to Robert Moog and made it an integral part of future pop music before Walter (now Wendy) Carlos released his famous and wonderful "Switched on Bach" album in 1968. All that is certainly for another story, so we will concentrate on the album Mort Garson recorded and released a few years after his monumental works "The Zodiac - Cosmic Sounds" (1967), "The Wozard Of Iz" (1968) and "Lucifer - Black Mass" (1971). Any fan of unique psychedelic (The Zodiac) and mind-blowing electronic music (the other two works) should certainly have their ears pricked for these three masterpieces, but there was more to come. "Plantasia", originally released in 1976, was billed as "warm earthy music for plants and the people who love them". So, as a listener, you can imagine that what you have the opportunity to listen to here is a rather light affair, far from the dark and sultry atmosphere of earlier electronic tracks. A vibrant variety of styles has been used as the basis for dreamy and colourful compositions that actually feel like the soundtrack to a non-existent movie. The warm yet haunting moog melodies manage to create, even in the most playful and surreal moments, a rather sinister atmosphere that you would expect when watching some horror films from Italy in the early to mid seventies. There's a sense that although everything seems calm and relaxed on the outside, something absolutely terrible is about to rise. Those are just some of the passages, to be sure, and when Mort Garson and his cronies switch from lush orchestral soul arrangements to what white men have always considered to be the tribal music of North American natives, you'll find yourself drifting from one scene of the film of your inner mind to the next. By this time in the seventies, the technical demands were a little better, new inventions like electronic drums coming into their own here and there, bringing back memories of records by German electronic pioneers from the same era like Cluster, Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream. And despite the shimmering harmonies and big arrangements that hint at the big band music and orchestral pop that Mort Garson drew on, the whole work is futuristic and fascinating. It therefore comes across more like an old science fiction film than a horror movie, but we'll leave the interpretation up to you. The best way to enjoy this masterpiece of synth music is to lie back and close your eyes and let yourself drift into territory previously unknown to man.
