Absolution is the third studio album by Muse , released on 15 September 2003 in the United Kingdom. The album reached number one on the UK Albums Chart and number two on the Billboard 200. It was certified platinum by the British Phonographic Industry Association and the Recording Industry Association of America. The album spawned five singles: "Time Is Running Out", "Hysteria", "Butterflies and Hurricanes", "Sing for Absolution" and "Stockholm Syndrome". The album Absolution was recorded in Milan, Italy from December 2002 to April 2003. The album was produced by Rich Costey, who had worked with the band on their previous album Origin of Symmetry. The album's title was inspired by a line from the song "Butterflies and Hurricanes": "I can't control myself because I'm falling apart". The album artwork was designed by Storm Thorgerson, who also designed the artwork for Muse 's previous albums. The album's booklet contains a number of cryptic messages, many of which reference the lyrics. The album Absolution was met with favorable reviews from music critics.
