The album was produced by Russ Russell and the artwork was created by longtime Napalm Death artist Mick Harris. Utilitarian is the first Napalm Death album to feature new bassist Shane Embury and new drummer Danny Herrera. It is also the first album Jesse Pintado has contributed to since his death in 2006. The album was met with mostly positive reviews from music critics. On Metacritic, which assigns a standard rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 78, which means "generally favorable", based on 9 reviews. Eduardo Rivadavia of AllMusic gave the album 4.5 out of 5 stars, stating that " Napalm Death have never been as vital, necessary and crushingly heavy as they are on Utilitarian". Rivadavia further stated that "the album is an uncompromising and unrelenting sonic assault that will leave listeners bruised and battered, but ultimately invigorated and revitalized". Phil Freeman of Kerrang! magazine gave the album 4.5 stars out of five, calling it " Album valt binnen het genre Rock, Death Metal en Grindcore.
