The album features Simone, bassist Jimmy Bond and drummer Max Roach. The album includes the song "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free", which was later covered by Ray Charles and Donny Hathaway. The album was released on CD in 1990 by PolyGram Records. In 2003, the album was released as part of the compilation album The Philips Years. The album was well received by music critics. AllMusic gave the album 4.5 stars out of 5, stating, "This is one of Simone's most essential albums and a must for any fan of jazz, blues or soul music." The album peaked at number 149 on the Billboard 200 chart.
