For almost 25 years Opeth have been an immovable force, consistently rejecting all genre rules and other conventions and instead forging their own path with a unique sound somewhere between metal and progressive. Such is the case with their new release, for which the Swedes have chosen the name "Pale Communion". The band around singer, guitarist and songwriter Mikael Åkerfeldt has been one of the most distinctive combinations in hard music since its formation in Stockholm in 1990, with members from the then blossoming Swedish death metal scene never allowing themselves to be pigeonholed or limited to one musical genre since their first recordings. Opeth's creative drive has always been the will to express their unbridled love for music. And they do this in every conceivable way, weaving all sorts of influences into their signature metal sound. At the latest since the release of "Still Life" in 1999 (on which they showed a spiritual and professional connection with progressive icon Steven Wilson - a connection that remains unbroken to this day), Opeth have been in a league of their own when it comes to pioneering the crossover of metal with various styles that are alien to the genre.
