The songwriting process began while the Pet Shop Boys were on tour with Take That, with some tracks even being written as early as 2008. The album was co-produced by the Pet Shop Boys and Andrew Dawson, who as sound engineer had worked extensively on Kanye West's '808s & Heartbreaks' - an album that Neil Tennant was "slightly obsessed with" at the time. The dark atmosphere in the lyrics of Elysium is reflected in the sound of the album. Neil Tennant: 'On the one hand it's very "deep" sonically - it has a lot of sub-bass - but it's also deep in terms of the themes and the way they're phrased. But I think it's the most beautiful Pet Shop Boys album."
