After two UK #1 albums, two million sales and widespread international acclaim, you'd think you'd know what to expect from Royal Blood. That assumption was thoroughly dispelled last summer when they released "Trouble's Coming", a melting pot of snappy rock riffs and danceable beats, with which the Brits introduced something completely fresh, unexpected and yet seamlessly fitting into their existing manuscript. When Mike Kerr and Ben Thatcher sat down to talk about recording a new album, they knew what they wanted to achieve. It was to be a conscious return to their roots, to a time when they were making music influenced by Daft Punk, Justice and Cassius' Philippe Zdar. This called for a return to a basic approach, similar to the one that made their debut album so haunting, instinctive and original. "We stumbled upon this sound rather by accident and immediately became hooked," Kerr recalls. "That's what sparked the creative spark on the new album - chasing that feeling. The funny thing is, when you think about 'Figure It Out,' it practically contains the core of this album. We realized that we didn't have to completely destroy what we had created up to that point. We just had to shift it, change it. On paper, it's a bit of an innovative project. But when you listen to it, it sounds so fresh." These characteristics are intertwined in the new single and title track. Kerr's swirling bass has a hypnotic effect, and his vocals alternate raspy rock screams with soulful falsetto. He's backed by Thatcher's thumping beat and a dense rhythm section punctuated by groovy hi-hats. Whether directly or obliquely, the album explores the downsides of the success Royal Blood have experienced - the result of the realisation that success is far more complex than it seems, and that time for a fresh perspective is a precious commodity that is increasingly fleeting. The situation called for reflection and change, which Kerr initiated in Las Vegas. He emptied an espresso martini and declared it his last drink. It wasn't long before he found that his newfound clarity had a positive impact on his creativity and his entire life. This new attitude was reflected in the pair's decision to produce most of the album "Typhoons" on their own. "Boilermaker" was produced by Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme - the two bands met when Royal Blood supported them on a massive North American tour. Multiple Grammy winner Paul Epworth produced "Who Needs Friends" and co-produced "Trouble's Coming".
