Scenery is undoubtedly one of the most important Japanese jazz albums ever recorded. It showcases Ryo Fukui as an astonishingly brilliant self-taught pianist who blends modal, bop and cool jazz influences into a very distinctive, deft and playful interpretation of classic standards made famous by Bing Crosby and John Coltrane, among others. From "It Could Happen To You" and its calm and serene opening, which magically transitions into a happy and upbeat track, to the ethereal piano solo in "Early Summer" and the incredible teamwork in "Autumn Leaves", where Fukui leads Satoshi Denpo (bass) and Yoshinori Fukui (drums) into groove heaven, every note on the album exudes precision, confidence and talent, and the different sections flow seamlessly into each other, creating an exquisite and elegant blend of jazz. Ryo Fukui, often compared to McCoy Tyner or Bill Evans, was a genius in his own right, a true master of his craft whose perfectionism led to the creation of some of the finest music ever recorded. Scenery is his magnum opus and an absolute must. After Scenery, this magician and pianist from Hokkaido released the 1977 soul gem Mellow Dream (also available on We Release Jazz). He then concentrated on honing his performing skills, frequently performing at the Slowboat Jazz Club in Sapporo (which he founded with his wife Yasuko Fukui) and releasing two live albums. Ryo Fukui sadly passed away in March 2016, leaving behind a legacy that is sure to captivate future generations of jazz lovers.
