Dissecting Santana's tightly bound bundles of music into manageable stylistic chunks is like a game of Mikado that is impossible to win even for skilled operators. Whether the drumstick is called funk, jazz, rock, R&B or folk: when you try to pluck out a single piece with your pointed fingers, the whole litter vibrates along with it. How simplistic, on the other hand, seems the frequent attempt to arrange playlists according to more or less commercially oriented compilations. Once the ranking is finally carefully evaluated and cleverly explained to friends, everyone can once again enjoy the juicy string rolls of a blockbuster like "Caravanserai" or "Welcome" with a broad smile - quality can pay off, after all. On his seventh album, the guitar guru once again surrounds himself with many freshly recruited fellow musicians and star producer David Rubinson. The latter has overseen the creation of a project that is very reminiscent of the early Santana sound: whether it's the palpable vocal infatuation and multitude of buzzing, rumbling, clicking rhythms or the inimitable frothy guitar solos that you can't imagine a Santana record without. So why bother dissecting styles, genres and merchants when this record is at least one of the six or seven (or was it eight?) most important? With Santana, after all, all the Amigos remain. Rozložit Santanovy pevně svázané svazky hudby na zvládnutelné stylové kousky je jako hra Mikádo, kterou nelze vyhrát ani pro umělecké chirurgy s chirurgickými zkušenostmi. Ať už se klacek jmenuje funk, jazz, rock, R&B nebo folk: při pokusu vypáčit jednotlivé kousky špičatými prsty s ním vibruje celý vrh.
Naproti tomu častá snaha řadit seznamy skladeb podle více či méně komerčně zaměřených kompilací působí zjednodušeně. Jakmile je pořadí konečně pečlivě vyhodnoceno a chytře vysvětleno přátelům, může si každý opět se širokým úsměvem vychutnat šťavnaté smyčcové rolády kasovního hitu typu "Caravanserai" nebo "Welcome" - kvalita se přece jen může vyplatit.
Na svém sedmém albu se kytarový guru opět obklopil mnoha čerstvě naverbovanými muzikanty a hvězdným producentem Davidem Rubinsonem. Ten dohlížel na vznik projektu, který velmi připomíná raný Santanův zvuk: ať už jde o hmatatelnou vokální zamilovanost a hojnost bzučících, klepajících, řinčících, cvakajících rytmů nebo nenapodobitelná zpěvná, svižná kytarová sóla, bez nichž je Santanova deska nemyslitelná. Proč se tedy zabývat zkoumáním stylů, žánrů a kupeckých skupin, když tato deska patří přinejmenším mezi šest nebo sedm (nebo to bylo osm?) nejdůležitějších? Nakonec Santana zůstává všemi Amigos.
