"It's been an interesting journey from the mid-'90s to now," Slash said. "I never really thought about what am I going to do in the long run? Or chewed over my solo career, where it was going. I just jammed and went where the muse took me. And this is the first time I feel like I'm in the saddle and driving my own destiny with some real focus." Aber Apocalyptic Love ist nicht einfach nur ein neues Album des berühmten Gitarristen mit dem schwarzen Zylinder und den magischen Riffs, für Slash und seine drei Co-Conspirators ist es Schicksal. "The whole album was recorded as a live performance, when the band was set up together in a big room," so Produzent Eric Valentine, in dessen Barefoot Recording Studios in Hollywood die Aufnahmen zu Apocalyptic Love stattfanden. "Slash played his solos live when the drums were sounding. The vocals were overdubbed as Myles Kennedy played rhythm guitar live. The whole thing consists of Todd Kerns' bass, Brent Fitz's drums and two lead guitars. Slash played the solos while the band jammed, so we didn't have to go back and redo the solos, which he loved." "It was important to capture the essence in that big room because as long as I was doing studio recordings, I always wanted to keep my guitar tracks from actually playing live with the band," fügt Slash hinzu. "And I kind of reworked them because I never got tired of playing with headphones on. So Eric built this little room within the main room just for me, which he called the Slash Box, where I could play my parts and solos while still being able to see the band, which worked great." Auf allen 13 Songs von Apocalyptic Love spürt man ein gewisses Gefühl von Freiheit, genau wie die außergewöhnliche Chemie zwischen Slash und Sänger Myles Kennedy, deren kreative Freundschaft begann, als der Alter Bridge Sänger die Vocals zu zwei Songs auf Slashs Solodebüt beisteuerte. Diese Kollaboration begann völlig intuitiv: "I contacted him out of the blue, sent him one of the songs I was working on, which later turned out to be 'Starlight'. "I was playing it to Eric, so we flew Myles out to shoot it, and there was this unassuming mild-mannered guy, similar in demeanor to me, kind of quiet, not explosive in personality. Then he nailed "Back from Cali", it was like, 'Are you ready to go on tour with us? I was so happy when he accepted the offer." Natürlich benötigte Slash auch noch eine Rhythmusabteilung, um seine Kompositionen entsprechend umsetzen zu können. Nachdem zahlreiche Schlagzeuger vorgespielt hatten, entschied er sich für Brent Fitz. "He was perfect," says Slash. "And Brent introduced me to Todd Kerns, who was not only an amazing bass player, but sings like a motherfucker. It was really magical - a throwback band that was just right." Myles Kennedy und Slash fanden schnell heraus, dass sie eine tiefgehende kreative Energie verband, die einige brilliante Songideen hervorbrachte. "I wrote down chords and concepts and played them to Myles," Slash said. "He automatically stuck to what was in the song and added these great melodies and lyrics. We started putting together these basic arrangements and the songs came together." Bei Songs wie You're a Lie, Standing in the Sun, No More Heroes, Bad Rain, und die mitreißende Ballade Not for Me, spürt man die Verbindung zwischen Gesang und Gitarre ganz deutlich. "'Not For Me' is perhaps my favourite track on the record, a labour of love and retrospective," erklärt der Sänger. "The lyrics are based on conversations I had with Slash about his bad behavior from long ago, combined with things I've experienced. About twelve years ago I went through a pretty dark period where I experimented with things I probably should have avoided and that didn't sit well with me. The song is about me waking up and seeing that things needed to change and that it was time to take a different path in life. I think a lot of people go through that in different circumstances, not just artists or rock stars. It could be anything that's not working, a mindset, a habit, a pattern or a relationship." Die Beziehung zwischen Frontmann und Gitarrist ist geradezu berühmt für ihre Zerbrechlichkeit. Empfindliche Egos können selbst die atemberaubendste Synergie zerstören. Die Straße des Rock n Roll ist gepflastert mit den Kadavern gescheiterter Duos. Aber Slash und Myles haben ihre Kräfte vereint, als wäre es das Natürlichste auf der Welt und mit viel gegenseitigem Respektem und einer beiderseitigen Bewunderung haben sie die Grundlage für eine fruchtbare Zusammenarbeit geschaffen. "What I like so much about Slash's game is the immense feeling he gives to his craft," Myles says. "There's a certain pain in the way he bends the tone, in the vibrato. He plays as beautifully on this record as he does on all the records he's made, but there's a slightly more beautiful pain in his technique now. Being a guitar player myself, I just admire his method and style." Sich trotz der jüngsten Auszeichnungen und den damit einhergehenden wilden Spekulationen auf sein derzeitiges Projekt zu konzentrieren, war sicherlich keine leichte Aufgabe. Aber irgendwie hat Slash es geschafft, seinen Focus auf Apocalyptic Love zu legen. "I know that the induction of GN'R into the Hall of Fame and the 25th anniversary of Appetite is on many people's minds," gibt Slash zu. "But when you're making a record, you just make a commitment not to bring those distractions into the process. You have to sort
