The album was positively reviewed by critics, with Steve Huey of AllMusic stating that "Seasons in the Abyss is Slayer's most musically consistent album, and perhaps their darkest and most sinister". The album was nominated for a 1991 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance, but lost to Metallica's own album. The album's title track was released as a single in 1990 and the video for it was directed by Thomas Mignone. The song was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 1991. The album was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on November 13, 1995 and has since gone platinum.

Nahrávání pátého studiového alba začalo v roce 1989. Jako koproducent byl angažován Andy Wallace.

Seasons in the Abyss vyšlo v říjnu 1990 prostřednictvím nové nahrávací společnosti Ricka Rubina Def American. Album se umístilo v americké hitparádě na 44. místě a v roce 1993 získalo zlatou desku. K titulní skladbě kapela natočila svůj první videoklip. Krátce před druhou válkou v Perském zálivu skupina odletěla do Egypta navštívit pyramidy v Gíze. Další videoklip byl natočen pro War Ensemble v Londýně.
