Jedenáct písní se tematicky zabývá životem a smrtí, láskou a ztrátou a umělcovou snahou pochopit lásku v celé její kráse i ošklivosti. Carrie & Lowell nahrál sám Stevens. Účinkují Casey Foubert, Laura Veirs, Nedelle Torrisi, Sean Carey, Ben Lester a Thomas Bartlett. Mixovali Stevens, Bartlett a Pat Dillet.

Sufjan Stevens v současné době žije v Brooklynu ve státě New York. Jeho záliba v epických konceptech ho posunula k vytvoření dvou státnických alb (Michigan & Illinois), sbírky duchovních a biblických písní (Seven Swans), elektronického alba pro zvířata čínského zvěrokruhu (Enjoy Your Rabbit), dvou vánočních boxů (Songs for Christmas, vol. 1-5 a Silver & Gold, vol. 6-10) a přelomové tónové básně na objednávku Brooklynské hudební akademie neboli BAM pro Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (The BQE).

V roce 2010 vydal Stevens formátově pestré EP (All Delighted People) a celovečerní album The Age of Adz, kolekci písní přinejmenším částečně inspirovaných outsiderským umělcem Royalem Robertsonem.
