Beatles měli zásadu, že singly z LP desek se po vydání alba nesmí vydávat - pět jejich alb neobsahuje žádný singl.

Past Masters obsahuje 33 skladeb Beatles, které se neobjevily na albu - od klasických áčkových stran až po hity zpívané v němčině. V roce 1988 byly vydány dvě CD s názvy Past Masters Volume One a Volume Two. Ačkoli původně obsahovaly kombinaci mono a stereo verzí, remasterovaná kompilace Past Masters obsahuje pouze stereo mixy, pokud existují.

Je zde zastoupena řada nejznámějších a nejuznávanějších skladeb skupiny a kolekce ukazuje, kolik práce bylo za pouhých sedm let vykonáno.
