The album was recorded between January and May 1985 at RAK Studios in London and is the band's first album with new drummer Boris Williams. The Head on the Door is a transitional album for the band, featuring elements of the band's gothic rock and pop style. The album has been described as "a collection of disparate songs that together form a cohesive whole". Several songs on the album were written by singer and guitarist Robert Smith and bassist Simon Gallup, while other songs were written by keyboardist Lol Tolhurst and drummer Boris Williams. The album was produced by Dave Allen and The Cure . The album artwork was designed by Smith. The Head on the Door was the band's first album to enter the UK Albums Chart, where it reached number seven. The album also reached the top ten in several other countries, including Ireland, the Netherlands and New Zealand. The album was certified gold in the UK by the UK Phonographic Industry and has sold over two million copies worldwide. The album spawned three singles
