If you were to ask the community of Grateful Dead fans over the past few decades to name the most important concerts by this Franciscan band, Deadheads would sum it up: the most popular concerts are the ones at the Fillmore East (New York, February 13, 1970) and Barton Hall (Ithaca, New York, May 8, 1977). By far the most notable concert was the August 27, 1972 concert in Veneta, Oregon, a fundraiser for longtime spiritual contemporaries (Merry Pranksters) Ken and Chuck Kesey , whose alternative family dairy business in the small Oregon village of Springfield, near the town of Veneta and not far from the hippie paradise of Eugene, was in dire straits. This event went down in the annals of the Grateful Dead under many names: 'Veneta, the Field Trip', 'The Springfield Cream Benefit', 'The Last Acid Test' or simply 'The Field Test'. When in August 1972, brothers Ken and Chuck Kesey (the former the author of the world-famous novel "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest") asked the Grateful Dead for support in the form of a benefit concert, it's no wonder they agreed without hesitation. Admittedly, the timing couldn't have been better: The Dead had exactly one week off between the Berkeley shows and their upcoming big fall tour in Colorado. The deal was simple: the Keseys and their Merry Pranksters took care of everything organizational: from mandatory permits, promotion, and law enforcement to stage construction and equipment. The Dead and the New Riders of the Purple Sage (as the backing band) only had to take care of the music part of the event. Sunday, August 27, 1972, the day of the big local event. A beautiful summer day - and hot. Already around noon, temperatures were measured in the 40s. By this time, word had already spread through the Deadheads community in California and neighboring states that their favorites would be holding one of their outdoor concerts at the fairgrounds in the small town of Veneta, Oregon. The huge crowd spontaneously went into motion. By the end of the concert a good 25,000 people were said to have turned out. The whole event was so peaceful and harmonious that many attendees talked about a little Woodstock..... Grateful Dead played three sets and every song was played to near perfection! Just "Dark Star" at the beginning of the third set or the block of "China Cat Sunflower">"I Know You Rider" are pure magic!!! The music offers the listener an upbeat experiential journey (sometimes haunting, sometimes haunting) through the symbolic cycle of birth>life>death>restoration: "China Cat Sunflower">"I Know You Rider" (birth), "Playing in the Band", "Bird Song", "Greatest Story Ever Told" (life), "Dark Star">El Paso", "Sing Me Back Home" (death) and "Sugar Magnolia" (renewal). The Dead had great moments at all of their shows. This performance, however, is the pinnacle of what they have been capable of artistically in this decade. For the band themselves, the journey north was triumphant, not at all a grueling performance in the most extreme conditions of their career. And it was the spirit that prevailed between the audience, the organizers and the band that made "Veneta, the Field Trip" a unique experience. The entire 8 / 27 / 72 concert mixed and mastered into an HDCD from the original 16-track tapes by Jeffrey NormanA brand new double-sided cover by Steve Vance Reviews , "The concert on which the Sunshine Daydream triple CD is based is one of the greatest moments in the band's concert history. (...) If any live album deserves the moniker "trip", it is without a doubt this one." (Stereo Play, November 2013) "From the popular psychedelic classics of the early years to the songs from the masterpieces "American Beauty" and "Workingman's Dead" to country evergreens, the band made music so relaxed and sometimes virtuosic that it seemed to want to make you forget all the hardships of that pastoral setting." (Rolling Stone, November 2013) "A particular attraction of this box set is the surprisingly small number of Grateful Dead videos - there is, however, only one recording of Veneta. A bootleg of the film has been circulated - and according to insiders, this concert documentary is the most requested in Dead history. Especially because the band played with tremendous enthusiasm, with a mixture of compact songs and jams, rock, blues, country and rock 'n' roll, especially Jerry Garcia, who gave vent to his best solos."
