The album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, released in 1995, is the third studio album by The Smashing Pumpkins.The double album was produced by frontman Billy Corgan and Flood and recorded at various studios in Chicago. The album was a commercial success, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 chart and eventually selling over four million copies in the United States. Four singles were released from it, including the chart-topping "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" and "1979". The album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.

This follows last year's award-winning reissues (*see quotes below) of the band's first two breakthrough albums, Gish (1991) and Siamese Dream (1993), as well as the band's third album, Pisces Iscariot (1994), released this summer. "The thing that strikes me now about Mellon Collie is that we based it on the recording of Siamese Dream with Butch Vig - which was a very idealised statement," Corgan tells writer David Wild in the liner notes.
