It was the first album Tool released on a major label (Volcano Records) and was produced by David Bottrill, who had previously worked with bands such as King Crimson, Peter Gabriel and Tool , contemporaries of Rage Against the Machine. The album title is a combination of the words "anima" and "enema". "Anima" is a Jungian term that refers to the unconscious, instinctual side of the human psyche, while "enema" is a medical procedure in which fluid is injected into the rectum to cleanse it. The title suggests the album's themes, which range from the personal to the political. The album's first track, "Stinkfist," is an aggressive, heavy song that sets the tone for the rest of the album. The lyrics of the song deal with the singer's struggle with addiction and his efforts to overcome it. "Eulogy" is a more introspective song that deals with the death of a friend.
