Product information:All the carols on this recording are from the excellent collection of ninety carols compiled and arranged by William Llewellyn and published by Novello & Company in 1986. The collection offers a strong, practical blend of contrasting carols, suitably adapted to the needs of the choir today. From Giovanni Gabrieli to Judith Weir, from medieval melodies to spirituals, the stylistic range in The Novello Book of Carols covers a wide spectrum of tastes. Fresh arrangements of carols central to Christmas are set alongside original compositions, and some beautiful medieval words are contrasted with new contemporary texts. Sixteen new carols and a further thirty-nine arrangements are published for the first time, and sixty-nine titles are suitable for unaccompanied singing. For adventurous choirs, this collection includes several carols in their original languages (French, Catalan and German), with alternative English versions also available.
In addition to the traditional temple, church or choral use of The Novello Book of Carols unaccompanied and with organ, as on this recording, there are opportunities to perform selections from the collection in other ways. Optional orchestral versions are available for the twenty-five carols (on loan from Novello). Twenty-one carols have been published as The Novello Junior Book of Carols, designed specifically for schools without SATB choirs, and are compatible with the 'parent' book, providing an ideal opportunity to combine school and adult choirs.
William Llewellyn is a respected figure in the world of choral music. After studying Natural Sciences at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where he won the Choral Exhibition award, Llewellyn continued his education at the Royal Academy of Music, where he studied composition with both William Alwyn and Eric Thiman. During his time at the Academy, Llewellyn founded the Linden Singers and served as conductor with this highly versatile ensemble. Following a recital at Wigmore Hall and an appearance on the BBC's Music at Ten television programme, regular broadcasts and tours abroad, including Holland and Spain, brought the Linden Singers and their conductor much acclaim and success.
