Arthur Alexander

Arthur Alexander

Pioneering American Country Soul Singer-Songwriter

Arthur Alexander was an American country soul singer and songwriter active during the 1960s and early 1970s. He is best known for his 1962 hit "You Better Move On," which was covered by the Rolling Stones and the Hollies, among others. His music had a significant influence on the development of Southern soul and country soul genres. Alexander's songs were also recorded by artists such as the Beatles ("Anna (Go to Him)"), and his work has been recognized by many as laying the groundwork for the fusion of country and R&B. Despite his influence, Arthur Alexander never achieved widespread commercial success during his lifetime. His career saw a resurgence in the early 1990s before his untimely death in 1993, just days after releasing his comeback album "Lonely Just Like Me." The albums "The Monument Years" and "Lay Down Your Arms" are compilations that feature some of his work, but they are not as well-known as his earlier recordings.
